The defender (left) counters the attacker's underarm bearhug grip by crossing his right palm over his left and pressing against the attacker's face. From this position the attacker's head and neck will be turned to his right and he will be forced off-balance. Note that the defender has taken a deep step to the inside line with his right foot.

The Maestro demonstrates a counter to 1 by passing his left foot back, pressing up against the opponent's wrists with his right hand, and hooking the opponent's advanced right leg with his left hand. By drawing the leg towards himself and pressing to the left with his right hand, the Maestro will be able to throw his opponent.

The defender (left) counters the attacker's overarm bearhug grip as in 1. Note that the defender's lead (right) leg is advanced outside the attacker's lead (left) leg. From this position, the defender could throw the attacker over his right thigh, force him off-balance backwards, or capture his left arm in a bar-lock.

The defender (right) demonstrates a counter to the face-pressure technique should the attacker advance his lead leg inside the defender's lead leg. From this position, the defender is able to bear down with his left elbow into the attacker's right elbow to neutralise the leverage advantage, and/or to thumb the attacker's right eye.
